Who is Jesus?
He is eternal. “He is before all things” -Colossians 1:17. John, chapter one says he was “before the world began”. John the Baptist refers to the preexistence of Jesus when he says, “He was before me” – verse 15. He is divine. “The Word was with God and the Word was God” – John 1:1. We have in this verse three great facts about Jesus:
1) when – “before the world began”;
2) where – “with God”
3) who – “was God”.
Jesus was God and was with God. He was God and yet stood apart from God as a distinct person before the incarnation. “He is the image of the invisible God” – Col. 1:15. “For God was pleased to have all His Fullness dwell in Him”. Jesus is not just born, He is sent (John 3:16). “His name is to be called Emmanuel (which means, God with us)” – Matthew 1:23 & Isaiah. 7:14).
“The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw His glory” – John 1:14. In the incarnation Jesus is 100% God and 100% man. In Him the Divinity and the humanity is one person. Notice Paul’s explanation of the incarnation in these two important verses: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” – Col. 2:9. Compare this to: “Christ Jesus, who, being in very form God” – Phil. 2:6. There are three key words in Paul’s explanation:
1) Fullness – totally; entirely; filled; complete; in whole.
2) Godhead – Deity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit; 100% God; “all the fullness”. But very significant is the word
3) “Form” (substance).
This same word applies to both His eternal preexistence and to His earthly existence. It defines the incarnation. He is 100% man (in bodily form) and he is 100 % God (in very form God). “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given” – Isaiah 9:2. Jesus is both born and given because He has both eternal preexistence and earthly existence in His incarnation.
Why did God send Jesus in the incarnation?
The reason is explained in John 1 “to make Him (God) known” -Verse 18. The importance of the incarnation is seen in this: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” to reveal God.ÂJesus came to reveal God to man. He was sent by God so that “all might believe through him (Jesus)” – John 1:7. He came to “enlighten every man” – Verse 9. Notice the emphasis in John’s gospel on his words: ALL; EVERY; and John 3:16’s WHOSOEVER. You can substitute YOUR NAME in each of these verses and you can be sure that NO NAME is excluded from God’s plan of salvation. Jesus came not just to be with us, but also to be our savior.
Who is Jesus?
That is the most important question that every person must answer. John has foreseen two responses: Some “did not receive him” -Verse 11 and others “who received him” -Verse 12. That is to say we either accept or reject Jesus. So how does the question “Who is Jesus?” relate to you? In the same way that it will relate to every person; we must receive Him. “But to all who received Him, who believed in His name, He gave power to become children of God; who were born . . . Of God” – John 1:12. – Pastor Grail Storm
